श्रीभगवानुवाच

18.2 काम्यानां कर्मणां न्यासं संन्यासं कवयो विदुः। सर्वकर्मफलत्यागं प्राहुस्त्यागं विचक्षणाः

The Bhagavat said, "The seers understand the act of renouncing desire-motivated actions as renunciation; the experts declare the relinquishment of the fruits of all actions to be relinquishment."

Shri Purohit Swami

Lord Shri Krishna replied: The sages say that renunciation means forgoing an action which springs from desire; and relinquishing means the surrender of its fruit.

Swami Adidevananda

The Lord said The sages hold that Sannyasa is the giving up of all works which are motivated by desire. The wise declare Tyaga to be the abandonment of fruits of all works.

Swami Gambirananda

The Blessed Lord said The learned ones know sannyasa to be the giving up of actions done with a desire for reward. The adepts call the abandonment of the results of all works as tyaga.

Swami Sivananda

The sages understand Sannyas to be the renunciation of action with desire; the wise declare the abandonment of the fruits of all actions as Tyaga.

Listen to My decision, O Arjuna, about abandonment; for abandonment (Tyaga) is declared to be of three kinds.

Certain wise men declare that the harmful action should be relinquished, while others say that the actions of performing sacrifices, giving gifts, and observing austerities should not be relinquished.

Shri Purohit Swami

Some philosophers say that all action is evil and should be abandoned. Others that acts of sacrifice, benevolence and austerity should not be given up.

Swami Adidevananda

Some sages say that all actions should be given up as evil; others declare that works such as sacrifices, gifts and austerities should not be given up.

Swami Gambirananda

Some learned persons say that action, beset with evil (as it is), should be given up, and others (say) that the practice of sacrifice, charity and austerity should not be given up.

Swami Sivananda

Some philosophers declare that all actions should be abandoned as an evil, while others declare that acts of gift, sacrifice and austerity should not be relinquished.
